It was a cozy February morning many years ago when we first discovered the magic that would change our lives. Thin winter light filtered through our Portland Airbnb curtains as we prepared for our very first Columbia River Gorge hike. Little did we know that the Latourell Falls hike would become our gateway to a lifetime of waterfall adventures.

As the closest waterfall to Portland, Latourell Falls offers the perfect introduction to the Columbia River Gorge’s spectacular world of cascading water and moss-covered forests. This accessible 2-mile loop showcases everything that makes the gorge special – and it’s unaffected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire that impacted many other trails.

    Latourell Falls Hike Overview

The Latourell Falls trail is a 2-mile loop that takes you to two stunning waterfalls: the dramatic 224-foot Lower Latourell Falls and the intimate Upper Latourell Falls. Located just 35-45 minutes from Portland, this Columbia River Gorge waterfall hike is perfect for beginners, families, and anyone wanting to experience the gorge’s beauty without a major time commitment.

    Trail Quick Facts:

    • Distance: 2 miles (loop trail)
    • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
    • Time: 1-2 hours
    • Elevation gain: Moderate climbing
    • Best for: First-time gorge visitors, families, photographers

    Two Waterfalls, One Amazing Hike

Lower Latourell Falls: The Main Attraction

Lower Latourell Falls is visible right from the parking lot, plunging 224 feet from tall basalt cliffs covered in distinctive yellowish lichen. This dramatic waterfall creates an impressive first impression and offers excellent photography opportunities from multiple viewpoints.

You can get closer views via a very short trail to the base, making it accessible even for those who don’t want to complete the full loop. The contrast between the white water and dark basalt cliffs, accented by that unique yellow lichen, creates one of the gorge’s most photogenic scenes.

Upper Latourell Falls: The Hidden Gem

Upper Latourell Falls requires hiking the loop trail but rewards visitors with an intimate waterfall experience. This smaller cascade flows into a natural basalt basin, surrounded by the gorge’s signature moss-covered forest. The trail passes behind the falls, offering a unique perspective you won’t find at many other Oregon waterfalls.

Best Time to Visit Latourell Falls

The Latourell Falls hike is spectacular year-round, with each season offering unique rewards:

    Winter (December-February):

    • Waterfalls at peak flow
    • Dramatic lighting through bare trees
    • Fewer crowds, peaceful atmosphere
    • Moss appears extra vibrant

    Spring (March-May):

    • Wildflowers beginning to bloom
    • Fresh green foliage emerging
    • Mild temperatures perfect for hiking

    Summer (June-August):

    • Lush forest at its peak
    • Warmest weather, longest days
    • Busiest season – arrive early

    Fall (September-November):

    • Spectacular autumn colors
    • Golden maple leaves create stunning contrasts
    • Comfortable hiking temperatures

    Latourell Falls Parking and Access

One major advantage of the Latourell Falls trailhead is the straightforward access and free parking. No fees, passes, or permits are required, making it perfect for spontaneous adventures.

    Getting There:

    • Drive time: 35-45 minutes from Portland
    • Parking: Free lot at trailhead
    • Permits: None required (outside Waterfall Corridor)
    • Accessibility: Loop trail with moderate elevation changes

The parking lot does fill up during peak times due to the trail’s popularity and proximity to Portland. Arriving early morning or later afternoon typically ensures better parking availability.

Why No Waterfall Corridor Permit Needed

Unlike many other Columbia River Gorge waterfalls, Latourell Falls sits just outside the official “Waterfall Corridor,” meaning no timed-use permits are required during busy summer months. This makes it an excellent backup option when other waterfall hikes are fully booked.

Trail Difficulty and What to Expect

The Latourell Falls loop trail features moderate climbing but remains accessible to most fitness levels. The trail isn’t suitable for those with knee injuries or requiring completely even surfaces, but it’s manageable for families with older children.

    Trail Highlights:

    • Moss-covered forest: Experience the gorge’s signature ecosystem
    • Multiple waterfall viewpoints: See both falls from various angles
    • Seasonal variety: Different experiences throughout the year
    • Photography opportunities: Excellent shots from multiple locations

    The History Behind Latourell Falls

The falls and surrounding area are named after Joseph Latourell, a pioneer who settled here in the late 1800s through the Homestead Act. Joseph and his wife Grace raised eight children and helped establish a bustling lumber town complete with shops and commercial buildings.

The Latourells were known for their love of music and dancing, helping create the social fabric of their community. Even before the Columbia River Highway was constructed (1913-1922), Portlanders would take steamboats up the Columbia River for afternoon picnicking and dancing at Latourell!

Today, a small community exists where the town once stood, though the commercial buildings have disappeared.

Combining Latourell Falls with Other Gorge Adventures

The Latourell Falls hike’s short distance makes it perfect for combining with other Columbia River Gorge attractions:

    Multnomah Falls (15 minutes away)

Oregon’s most famous waterfall, with options for easy viewing or challenging loop hikes to multiple cascades.

    Triple Falls (20 minutes away)

Three waterfalls flowing side-by-side, accessible via a scenic trail starting at Horsetail Falls.

    Hamilton Mountain (25 minutes away)

Combines waterfalls with panoramic gorge views, including the mystical Pool of the Winds.

    Eagle Creek (30 minutes away)

The gorge’s most famous trail, following narrow cliff-side paths past countless waterfalls.

    Photography Tips for Latourell Falls

    Lower Falls Photography:

    • Shoot from parking area for wide establishing shots
    • Hike to base for dramatic upward angles
    • Include yellowish lichen-covered cliffs in compositions
    • Use polarizing filter to reduce water glare

    Upper Falls Photography:

    • Capture intimate waterfall-in-forest scenes
    • Experiment with behind-the-falls perspectives
    • Focus on moss-covered details and textures
    • Try long exposures for silky water effects

    Planning Your Latourell Falls Adventure

    What to Bring:

    • Sturdy hiking shoes with good traction
    • Camera for waterfall photography
    • Light rain jacket (Oregon weather changes quickly)
    • Water and snacks for the loop hike

    Safety Considerations:

    • Trail can be slippery when wet
    • Stay on designated paths near waterfalls
    • Be cautious on rocky areas around falls
    • Check weather conditions before heading out

Why Latourell Falls Should Be Your First Gorge Hike

The Latourell Falls hike perfectly introduces visitors to everything special about the Columbia River Gorge. You’ll experience towering waterfalls, moss-draped forests, unique geology, and the area’s fascinating history – all in a manageable 2-mile adventure.

For first-time gorge visitors, this hike provides the confidence and inspiration to explore further. For experienced hikers, it offers a peaceful retreat and reminder of why the Columbia River Gorge remains one of Oregon’s most treasured destinations.

Conclusion: Your Gateway to Gorge Adventures

That cozy February morning when we first discovered Latourell Falls opened a world of adventure that continues today. This accessible, beautiful hike remains our top recommendation for anyone beginning their Columbia River Gorge journey.

Whether you’re a Portland local looking for a quick nature escape or a visitor wanting to experience Oregon’s famous waterfalls, the Latourell Falls hike delivers everything you’re seeking – dramatic cascades, lush forests, and that indescribable magic that makes the Columbia River Gorge unforgettable.
