A sofa is one of the biggest and most visible purchases in a home, and also one of the hardest to get right. It has to fit the room, survive daily life and look good for years. Traditional sofas are fixed in shape and cannot be cleaned easily, which is why modular sofas with removable, washable covers have become popular. This guide explains what to look for and how Livom, a modular sofa brand selling to German customers, approaches each point.

Everything below is based on information the brand publishes on its website. You can see the current range and conditions on the Livom website.

    What Makes a Sofa Modular

A modular sofa is built from separate parts, usually seat sections, corner pieces and sometimes a stool or chaise, that are joined together. The idea is that the sofa can grow or change shape if you move house or rearrange the room. Livom says its sofas can be extended or rearranged at any time and describes them as configurable in shape, size and layout.

The brand sells collections named Luma, Harvey, Nina, Terra, Aera, Donna, Katrina and Mike, in sizes from two-seater to five-seater, plus corner and U-shaped versions. A configurator on the site lets you build a combination from single elements.

Whatever shape you choose, think about how you really use the sofa. If you often have guests, a corner or U-shaped version gives more seats in the same space. If you mostly lounge, depth and cushion firmness matter more than the number of seats. Livom also lists models with a sleep function in some collections, which can replace a guest bed in a small flat.

    How the Modules Connect

Ask this question of any modular sofa: how stable is it, and can you separate it again? According to Livom’s FAQ, modules are fastened with connecting elements that depend on the model and configuration, for example alligator connectors or Velcro elements. The brand says the necessary connectors are included in delivery and that the modules can be detached easily, so you can rearrange the sofa without tools.

    Washable and Replaceable Covers

Removable covers are the main reason many people choose this type of sofa. Livom says the whole sofa has removable and washable covers, and recommends washing them at 30 degrees C on a gentle cycle. The brand also says you can order single covers later, through the replacement covers section of its accessories menu, which is useful if one section gets stained or you want a new look.

The brand describes its fabrics as robust, washable and pet-friendly, and its marketing shows families and dogs on the sofas. As always, check the care label of the exact fabric you choose, because different materials can have different washing instructions.

A practical tip for households with children or animals: choose a fabric you are comfortable washing often, and keep a note of the date of the last wash. Frequent gentle washing is easier than waiting until a stain has set, and it keeps removable covers looking fresh for longer.

Delivery, Assembly and the Trial Period

Big furniture purchases make people nervous, so the conditions matter as much as the sofa. Livom states the following on its site.

    • Delivery and assembly: free delivery into the living room and assembly. The brand adds that it will collect the sofa again if it does not fit.
    • Trial: 100 days of trial sitting at home. The page marks this with an asterisk, so read the full terms before you order.
    • Warranty: a five-year guarantee, according to the banner on the homepage.
    • Delivery time: shown on each product page, which the brand calls the most reliable indication for your chosen sofa.
    • Production: handmade in Europe by manufacturers that specialise in sofas.

Because the trial and guarantee have conditions, take a screenshot of the terms on the day you order and keep your confirmation email.

    Testing Fabrics Before You Commit

Colour on a screen is never quite the colour in your living room. Livom says it sends fabric swatches free of charge, so you can see colour and feel at home before buying. The brand also offers a free video consultation and showrooms where you can try different models in person, with a store finder on the website.
